Raising Disciples

Raising Disciples

A mother’s perspective

As a mom to two amazing boys, one aged 5 years and the other just 3 months old, I’m determined to raise them as passionate followers of Jesus. It’s both a huge honor and a real challenge to nurture their faith from such a young age, especially in today’s fast-paced world. I hold onto the wisdom of Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it,” as my guiding light through this incredible journey of motherhood. My deepest hope is that my boys will one day lead their own families with a strong foundation in Jesus, passing on love and blessings for generations to come.

Proverbs 22:6

My big guy, who’s only 5, is like a little detective, always hungry to know more and understand everything. His never-ending questions and curiosity blow me away every single day. I’m on fire to keep up with his enthusiasm, truly believing that if Jesus said it, then it’s true. I absolutely love sharing with him the stories of Jesus’ love, kindness, and all the great things he taught. It brings me so much happiness. By telling him simple yet powerful Bible stories and verses like Matthew 19:14, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these,” my goal is to plant in him an unwavering love for God and others. At the same time, it’s also strengthening my own faith in Jesus, just like a child’s simple and trusting faith.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these,”

Matthew 19:14

My youngest son, at 3 months old, is a cherished gift entrusted to me by God. Though our journey has just begun and he may be too young to grasp words, I firmly believe that the atmosphere of love, prayer, and unwavering faith in our home will shape his spirit and character in profound ways. Psalm 127:3 serves as a constant reminder, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him,” inspiring me to embrace and nurture both my sons with an abundance of love and wisdom.

Psalm 127:3

The challenge of raising God-fearing men in today’s world is undoubtedly tough. The distractions and temptations around us can easily lead young minds astray. However, I find unwavering comfort in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” With strong faith, perseverance, and fervent prayer, I can guide my sons toward a life firmly centered on Jesus.

I remember the first Christmas when my oldest kid really got what the holiday is all about. I had a tough time deciding if I should tell him about Santa and all the magic, or if I should focus on the true meaning of the season. I wondered if I was shorting his childhood by not including other cultural perspectives and teaching him what other children his age would ultimately learn instead. I really hoped he would understand and love the holiday for what it really means, a celebration of the birth of our Savior. Drawing strength from Romans 12:2, where it says “Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants—what is good, pleasing and perfect,” I explained to him how important it is for us to celebrate the holiday with love and devotion only for Jesus. I’m so happy that after five years, he still has the holiday spirit. And on top of that, he’s really passionate about sharing the message of the Gospel with his friends at such a young age, and he shows a strong unshakeable faith — something I am still trying to achieve myself at 26.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will,”

Romans 12:2

I know raising my boys won’t be a walk in the park, and honestly, it shouldn’t be. But I believe wholeheartedly that by teaching them to love, show compassion, forgive, and help others, they can be a positive force in today’s often challenging world. As followers of Jesus, they can learn to be kind and respectful, stand up for what’s right, and spread hope and positivity wherever they go. By living out Jesus’ teachings, they can make a real impact by supporting those in need, promoting peace in a world full of conflict, and inspiring others to live purposeful lives. In a world that can be chaotic and divided, guiding my boys as disciples of Jesus can empower them to make a positive difference in the lives of those around them.

On this incredible journey of raising my boys as disciples of Jesus, I know I’m not perfect, but I ask for God’s grace and guidance every step of the way. I invite all parents and caregivers on a similar path to join me in praying, supporting each other, and giving endless encouragement. Together, we can raise a generation of kids who bring light to the world, spreading love, compassion, and hope wherever they go. Let’s hold onto the promise in Proverbs 29:17, “Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.”

“Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.”

Proverbs 29:17

May our homes be filled with the fervor of Christ, our hearts be guided by His word, and our children grow up to be steadfast, fervent disciples who walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Amen.
